River GradeThe well known and widely used system which rates rivers ranges from class I to class VI. A class I river would be the easiest choice while class V would be the most challenging. The fact that rivers are rated based on their hardest rapids can often times be misleading. For example, many rivers that are rated class IV only have a few rapids at this level. Excitement
The number of rapids at a variety of different levels is also taken into consideration. The higher the rating, the greater the thrill of excitement.
It's quite common to have rivers with great rapids, but then a lot of flat water inbetween . We are fortunate that this is not the case in Costa Rica, something you will quickly notice!. So, the higher the rating, the more continuous the rapids.
Wilderness & IsolationTraveling by river into the rainforest takes you to destinations not accessable by other means of transport. Therefore, you really have the sense of exploration and being connected to nature. A high rating is equivalent to a more remote experience. Wild Life SpotingSomething most people really want.
